The Fourth of July is always a fun time to celebrate our freedoms with family and friends.
Here are a few safety tips from your Lincoln County Firefighters to ensure your holiday weekend is both safe and spectacular!
Fireworks are a blast, but leave them to the professionals
Lincoln County Fire Protection District strongly recommends residents leave the fireworks to the professionals on July 4.
Fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires per year, including 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, 16,900 outside fires and injure thousands of people each year.
Most firework related injuries are avoidable by not using consumer fireworks. If you do insist on setting fireworks off at home, be sure to keep these safety steps from the American Red Cross in mind:
- Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging.
- Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution.
- Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection.
- Light only one firework at a time, and NEVER attempt to re-light “a dud.”
- Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets.
- Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials.
- Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks.
We hope you have a safe and spectacular 4th of July.
